A Decorator’s Guide to Budget Home Decor in Dallas, TX
If you’re anything like me and don’t prefer shopping online, let me share my favorite chain stores for home decor finds that are not only unique, but also budget-friendly! When it comes to home decor, I’m wary of ordering online because I want to touch and hold the product to determine if it's of high quality. Nothing is worse than buying a blanket or sweater online and finding out it’s itchy and breaks you out in a rash. Also, you don’t have to break the bank to find something special that speaks to you- here’s my budget-friendly guide for how to find unique home decor finds at each of my favorite home decor stores! (While this guide features the best store locations in the Dallas, TX area, it also applies to the same stores in other cities and states.)
My advice for home decor & furniture shopping before you start your search:
Keep your eyes and mind open! It can be hard to imagine what pieces might look good in your home, so I recommend taking pictures of the spaces that need decor (before shopping), such as empty walls and entryway tables. Take pictures of the entire room as well, so that you can envision decor pieces in the space as a whole. And the key to finding great decor is seeing the potential a piece has- rarely do they end up living in a space by itself- staging 3-5 pieces near each other can help them “speak” to each other and let them shine together. It’s okay to put multiple things in your cart and put them back if they don’t give you that “spark”.
Best Locations in the Dallas, TX Area: Park Ln, Dallas; Park Blvd, Plano; Preston Rd, Plano (In my experience, I’ve found that stand-alone HomeGoods have better/more selection that ones connected to a T.J.Maxx or Marshalls.)
I love HomeGoods. I love stopping by whether I’m in the mood to window shop or need something specific (and odds are I'm leaving with a jar of some fancy-sounding sauce). They seem to have it all! But that’s also the downside of HomeGoods: because of the store’s broad audience, they stock mostly transitional (yet timeless) pieces and funky (yet says microtrend all over it- I’m looking at you, green velvet statue of David) pieces. Although it takes some searching, it’s possible to find things in other styles or that’ll blend well with other decor.
Instead of big furniture pieces, search for small accessory furniture like ottomans, nightstands, and sidetables.
Homegoods is stuck in a black and gold trend at the moment- try to avoid these and look for natural materials, like wood, stone, and ceramic.
Homegoods’ pillows are a hit or miss- make sure to check its materials and cushioning.
I’ve personally never found a big furniture piece that I like from HomeGoods- their selection of couches, buffets/sideboards, desks, and rugs tend to be bland and uninspired. It’s also important to look at materials- some are particle board “wood” while some are solid wood. However, most have unique small furniture items, such as armchairs, side tables, and nightstands. And oddly enough, I always see 10 or more ottoman benches in fun patterns and materials. I would also go to HomeGoods for their selection of organizational products. They have so many sizes and styles of woven baskets and clear bins which makes me, a professional organizer, very happy. And while their decorative accessories and textiles (pillows, throws, rugs) are samey, you can find glass decor and candles that are a bang for your buck.
Tons of woven baskets perfect for organizing a closet, pantry, or mudroom.
Organizational shelving for bathroom counters.
Rolling carts for office and craft supplies. Also perfect for adding space to compact kitchens.
Another section I’d watch out for is wall art because it’s full of whatever is trending at the moment, and this isn’t what you want for timeless decor that you’ll love for years. However, if you’re looking for something simple that will fill a large space, HomeGoods always has huge abstract art in various colors. If your style is contemporary or transitional, I’d recommend putting these in your living room and/or dining room.
Homegoods has a great selection of large abstract art.
I would recommend something like this- a set of 2 paintings that immediately brings cohesion and color to your space.
I would avoid the top 2 posters- although fun, the left one’s neon frame makes it difficult to style around. The margarita poster’s only purpose is a permanent cocktail recipe on your wall.

My biggest advice for finding home decor at Target is to find a collection that you love, and pick your top pieces from the collection for a cohesive look. For example, my favorite collection is Opalhouse™ By Jungalow™, which takes inspiration from bohemian, art deco, and mid-century modern interior design styles. I fell in love with the color and material of this orange velvet quilt and pillowcase set, and I used that to find the perfect tapestry and accent pillowcase with similar and contrasting colors.
My bedroom featuring Opalhouse™ By Jungalow™ bedsheets. The butterfly tapestry is from Earthbound Trading Co. (another favorite store of mine!).
Bold colors and bright patterns define the Opalhouse™ By Jungalow™ collection, even with bath accessories.
Threshold™ designed with Studio McGee features transitional, natural designs that work in every home.
I wanted to feature Target’s organizational collection, Brightroom, in its own section because I love it as a professional organizer! For its quality and variety of closet, kitchen, pantry, and storage products, everything is priced reasonably and you will be sure to find something that fits your home functions and aesthetics. I also find that for their price, the materials and designs feel high end and durable. I would even say that the quality is comparable to The Container Store and The Home Edit. I could go on and on comparing these brands of organizational products, but I will save that for its own blog post. Sign up for our newsletter here so you can be the first to know!
Brightroom has tons of clear bins and containers that work for many purposes and spaces in your home. On average, each is priced from $5-$30.
Brightroom’s kitchen organizational products feature useful designs, like turntables and tiered shelving made from high-end materials like bamboo and metal.
I love their selection of stylish baskets, made from materials like braided water hyacinth, felt, and coiled cotton rope.
World Market (or Cost Plus World Market)
Best Locations in the Dallas, TX Area: All World Market locations are about the same size and stock the same products, but clearance items vary a lot from store-to-store.
Out of every home decor store, online or in-person, low-budget or high-budget, World Market is my absolute favorite! I would describe my own home’s style as bohemian with touches of mid-century modern, and these two styles define their selection of furniture and home decor. World Market is known for bringing international styles, designs, and culture to America, with specialty food items and bold furniture and home decor pieces. But whether your personal style is bohemian and mid century modern or not, you will be sure to find unique pieces at reasonable prices. In addition, their quality is significantly better than Homegoods, Target, and IKEA.
Most of World Market’s furniture falls into mid-century modern and bohemian styles, with materials like wood, leather, velvet, and rattan.
World Market has some of the most unique furniture and decorative accessory designs for budgets of any size.
Their large selection of furniture and rugs can work for any home style, no matter how comfortable you are with color and texture.
Even if bold and bright colors/patterns isn’t your thing, every home style can benefit from pops of color and interesting textures. At World Market, you can find furniture made from rattan, marble, and natural woods like walnut and mango, as well as textiles made from fun textures like velvet, boucle, and jacquard. They have simple furniture designs that work as a backdrop for any interior style, such as transitional, contemporary, rustic farmhouse. However, you can also find eye-catching furniture and decor adorned with embellishments like embroidery, tassels, and tufts. As for home decor, I would suggest checking out their selection of wall art, lighting, rugs, and mirrors. I would skip their kitchen, bath, and candle sections- these items tend to be overpriced.
Their wall art is beautiful and striking, with bold colors and unique materials like carved wood and shells.
In my opinion, World Market has the least fake-looking fake plants, with flower varieties you can’t find elsewhere.
World Market has the most unique designs and materials when it comes to mirrors and wall decor.
Best Locations in the Dallas, TX Area: Luckily for us Dallasites, we have two locations: Grand Prairie and Frisco. (Both stores are comparable in size and product selection, but I’ve found that Frisco is way more busy on weekends due to neighboring state visitors.)
I can’t talk about low-budget home furnishings without talking about IKEA. You’ve probably stepped inside the Scandinavian-inspired maze at least once in your life, like when you needed to furnish your first apartment or dorm. The idea behind IKEA is to bring low-cost, functional home goods to the everyday person, no matter your style or budget. This makes IKEA special because you’ll find simplistic designs that won’t clash with your existing pieces.
IKEA has tons of pillowcases to choose from! They even sort them by color for easy comparison.
IKEA has beautiful contemporary lighting options, with unique materials like bamboo and metal.
Check out their selection of decorative glassware, including vases, candleholders, and bowls.
IKEA has the widest range of home goods products under one roof. From kitchenware and dining ware to niche organizational and cleaning products, they really have it all! They even have a restaurant so that you can take a break during your visit (if they’re serving the chicken cordon bleu, you need to try it! It’s my favorite). While the options can be overwhelming, let me give some advice on sections you need to check out versus skip. Firstly, their selection of textiles, such as pillowcases, throws, and rugs, are unmatched! With pillows in every color under the rainbow and different materials, you can be sure to find one for any couch color and material. I suggest going with a complimentary color (or within the same color family if you like neutrals) and a different material than your couch. For example, if you have a green velvet couch, go for burgundy cotton/linen pillows, and if you have a beige cotton/linen couch, pick a few brown and earthy red (or earthy green) pillows in fun materials (velvet, fur, etc.) The same color theory goes for rugs and throws!
While these baskets are specially made to fit in the KALLAX shelving, IKEA has stylish baskets of all shapes and weave patterns.
IKEA has tons of kitchen storage options at the lowest cost. (Pro tip: their resealable plastic bags are better & cheaper than brand name!)
Lately, IKEA has more decorative mirror options, which are perfect for an entryway or bedroom wall.
There aren’t any sections in IKEA that I would say steer clear of, but I would browse the wall art print section with caution. I find that most of their art is generic and trendy; while filling a wall is better than keeping it empty, I think finding the right painting that speaks to you is worth it. You’ll love it for years to come, instead of looking at a stock image all day. At my latest trip in April 2025, I found this true of most of their larger scale prints, but their smaller prints are getting more variety and personality. Another section I would advise on is the organizational products. As a professional organizer, I lovee the variety and how thoughtful IKEA’s designers were when thinking of functionality and aesthetics. However, take note of your home’s measurements versus IKEA’s products- the European designs result in odd sizing that don’t always line up perfectly with American homebuilders’ standards.
Does anyone else remember seeing these prints in everyone’s homes in the 2010’s? 😆
